Do manual transmissions get better gas mileage?

There aren’t many other industries that have advanced as quickly as the automotive industry. In barely a century, automobiles have come from custom-built horseless carriages to high-performing, highly efficient rolling computers. During the intervening years, some outdated information continues to persist. One of the most common misconceptions we continue to hear around the Jack Ingram Nissan showroom is the question, ‘Do manual transmission get better gas mileage?’ There was a time when this was true. Let’s take a closer look at a few pieces of information that could be helpful to people considering their options before they make an appointment with one of our product experts.

It shouldn’t be terribly difficult to understand that in the time since automatic transmissions have been introduced, they have really gained a lot of ground on the venerable stick-shift. In the early days of automatic transmissions, engineers had a hard time getting the design just right. This resulted in a loss off efficiency. However, the advent of modern technology has largely solved these issues. In fact, automatic transmissions have been able to meet or even exceed the fuel economy scores offered by their manual-transmission counterparts.

Tips for getting better fuel economy

Regardless of what kind of transmission your vehicle uses, there are some simple things you can do to make sure your car, truck or SUV will record the best possible fuel economy. We reached out to a few of our expert service technicians to see what tips they had to share.

Regular maintenance – Things like skipping oil changes, driving on improperly inflated tires or skipping out on regular maintenance will cause issues leading to a drop in fuel economy scores.

Take it easy – It will be very difficult to maintain any vehicle’s efficiency if the driver constantly floors the accelerator every time they want to move the vehicle. Slow starts and easy braking are best for maintaining fuel economy performance.

Use the right fuel — Make sure to check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle requires premium fuel or regular. Using the wrong fuel can lead to drops in performance and/or fuel economy.
